What is zeolite?
Zeolite is an aluminum silicate mineral or aluminosilicate of some metals with a uniform capillary system and containing group I and II cations.
The chemical formula of zeolite is: Mx/n[(AlO2)x(SiO2)y].zH2O.
In there:
- M: Metal with valence n.
- y/x: Si/Al atomic ratio, this ratio varies depending on the type of zeolite.
z: number of crystalline H2O molecules in the zeolite.
Currently, zeolite particles have sizes ranging from 1,000-5,000 nm and in the future they will reduce the particle size to below 100 nm to create nano materials, zeolite to increase the applicability of this material.
Structure of Zeolite
Zeolite particles are composed of a three-dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra linked in a three-dimensional space to form polyhedra, in which some Si elements are replaced by Al atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra.
In zeolite crystals, SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra are linked together via oxygen atoms. The space inside the crystal consists of small cavities connected by grooves of fairly stable size.
Thanks to the system of pores and grooves, zeolite can adsorb molecules smaller than the pore size and push out molecules larger than it.
