APPLICATIONS OF KAOLIN IN PRODUCTION
What is Kaolin?
Kaolin is a non-metallic mineral formed by the weathering of phenpars, mainly octodaz and albite. The weathering process is called kaolinization.
Chemical composition of Kaolin:
- Chemical formula: Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O
– Theoretical composition: Al2O3: 39.48%; SiO2: 46.6%; H2O: 13.92%
– Specific gravity: 2.57 – 2.61
- Hardness: 1 – 2.5
Kaolin reserves in Vietnam are estimated at about 15 million tons, the Al2O3 content in kaolin is about 29 – 38%. Kaolin ore is mainly concentrated in provinces such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Quang Ninh, Tuyen Quang, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc.
In industry, kaolin is used in many different fields including: ceramics, abrasive materials, aluminum production, refractory materials, paint fillers, rubber, paper, fertilizers, pesticides, etc.
Applications of kaolin
Production of fertilizers and pesticides
In fertilizer production: The main ingredient of base fertilizer is kaolin. Kaolin has the effect of adding Si4+ (SiO2) content, acting as a filler to help harden fertilizer particles, preventing fertilizer particles from clumping or clumping. The ingredients in kaolin help improve fertilizer quality and agricultural productivity.
In pesticide production: Kaolin acts as a carrier, has large diffusion and good adhesion. Spraying 1-6% kaolin mixture solution is an effective method to control pest attack pressure and protect crops from environmental stress such as reducing canopy temperature.
Rubber Industry
For the rubber industry, Kaolin helps harden, increase toughness, improve strength and elasticity, limit abrasion, and make the rubber surface shiny.
Paint Production
For the paint industry, kaolin is used as a filler to reduce product costs, increase viscosity, and increase paint durability.
Soap production
Kaolin helps increase the ability to solidify products during production and absorb grease when used.
Cosmetic industry
Kaolin is used in the cosmetics industry, especially in the production of special treatment lines for acne skin, kaolin helps regulate sebum, soothe red bumps, promote cell regeneration and prevent dark scars.
In the makeup powder line, kaolin has the effect of absorbing excess oil, creating a smooth, bright look for the foundation.
Fiberglass Manufacturing
Kaolin contains silica and alumina, which are used in the production of fiberglass. The demand for kaolin in the production of fiberglass has increased rapidly in recent years due to the restrictions on the use of asbestos in the production process, a substance that is harmful to health.
In addition, kaolin is used as raw material for the production of white cement, construction coatings, raw materials in the production of aluminum, alum, etc.
